I would like to use a BP substitute, mostly because of the UK laws about storing black powder. To use black powder I would have to get an explosives license and a special box to store the powder in. H870 by itself in a 45-70 only manages about 900 fps. With 5 grains of 4759 or similar you can get about 1200 fps and a lot less unburnt powder being thrown around. Just tried Hodgdon's mid-range load for 45-70 with 405g bullet in original Springfield trapdoor. The .454 Casull had a load of 28.5 gr of H110 for a 300 gr JFP bullet, but showing 44.2K of pressure. The .475 Linebaugh had a loading of 27.0 gr for a 385 gr cast LRNFP at 45.3K pressure. I have fired hundreds of 405 gr cast bullets over 27/5744 in 45-70 rifles of various types for years with outstanding results. This is a BP (or a little hotter) level load. Larger 5744 doses can be used for strong actions, but I usually go with other powders for stiff loads. As near as I can determine, H/IMR 4198 are considered the most efficient powders to use in high-end lever action handloads for 45-70 and 350-405-grain bullets. IMR 3031 is slightly slower burning powder than the 4198s.
